Hawa Abdi: The Mother of Hope in Somalia

Dr. Hawa Abdi, often referred to as the “Mother Teresa of Somalia,” was a beacon of hope for her war-torn country. Born in 1947 in Mogadishu, Somalia, Hawa pursued her medical studies in the Soviet Union at a time when it was rare for Somali women to access higher education. Not one to stop there, she later earned a law degree from Somali National University, showcasing her diverse talents and unwavering commitment to justice and human rights.

In the early 1980s, Hawa established a small clinic on her family’s land outside Mogadishu, initially focusing on maternal and child healthcare. What began as a modest effort soon transformed into a sprawling safe haven during Somalia’s civil war. At its peak, her compound provided shelter, food, education, and medical care to over 90,000 displaced people, operating under the auspices of the Dr. Hawa Abdi Foundation (DHAF).

Dr. Hawa’s clinic was more than just a medical center—it was a lifeline for thousands. She introduced programs to teach agricultural skills, literacy, and vocational training, empowering communities to rebuild their lives. Her approach combined her medical expertise with her legal knowledge, advocating for women’s rights and the equitable treatment of all individuals.

Her work was not without challenges. Armed militants sought to take control of her camp, but Hawa stood her ground, famously reminding them that her mission was for the Somali people. Her courage and leadership earned her global recognition, including nominations for the Nobel Peace Prize and awards from organizations like Vital Voices and Glamour.

Beyond her humanitarian efforts, Dr. Hawa was a fierce advocate for women’s empowerment, believing that the key to Somalia’s recovery lay in educating and uplifting its women. Her daughters, both trained doctors, have carried on her legacy, ensuring that the foundation continues to serve those in need.

Dr. Hawa Abdi passed away in 2020, but her indomitable spirit lives on. Her work remains a testament to the transformative power of compassion, education, and resilience. She will forever be remembered as a hero who combined her medical, legal, and humanitarian expertise to uplift her nation.
